Dogs have become part of lifestyle and they can be among the greatest companions. However, there are many dog breeds to choose from and finding the right one can be really tricky. You should choose a breed that really matches your lifestyle and you need to consider many things. Each breed could have different temperament and if you get the wrong breed, it may get problems in the future. If you want to be happier, you should find a dog that matches your lifestyle. Dogs also have their own needs and wants. You will get problems, if the dog suffers from distress and unhappy, because this could cause chaotic behaviour and even health issues. So, if you can’t fulfil the requirements of specific breed of dog, it may not be a good choice for you. People and dogs can exist together if they match properly together. Here are things that you should consider:
- Size of your home: A big dog won’t match your small apartment. So, if you don’t have enough space in your home, then you need a smaller breed. Dogs like German Shepherd, Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound and St. Bernard require plenty of space, which are appropriate if you have sizable lawn and backyard. If your home is quite small, you can choose breeds like Mini Schnauzer, Toy Poodle, White Terrier or Dachshund.
- Your level of activity: If you are an outdoorsy person, you should choose a breed known for happiness and high level of activity. The dog should also have long enough legs, so he/she can keep up when you walk briskly or run. If you often camp and go to rough country, you need a hardy dog with good coat of hair. If you are a couch potato, it is a good idea to choose a calmer dog that requires less physical exercise than other breeds.
- Your expectation: Many homeowners only desire simple accompaniment, but others may need a guard dog, due to the somewhat higher level of crime in the area. Good specimen of guard dog may include Terrier, Ridgeback, Boxer, Schnauzer, Doberman or Rottweiler. Labrador and Golden Retriever won’t make you happy, if you are looking for a guard dog.
- Your children: If you have small children, make sure that the dog can interact well. You should also take into account how the dog will behave towards your kid’s friends that will also play around the house. If the dog is very possessive and tend to guard your children too closely, this could cause some problems.
- Your neighborhood: You may run into problem with your neighbours if your dog barks too often, especially at night. Choose a breed that’s quieter, if you don’t want to disturb your neighbours.
- Your age: For older people, it is a good idea to choose a breed that’s more laid back and not too boisterous. It is also a good idea if the breed is easy to please and train.
